The Limbourg Brothers and Jean Colombe, The Funeral of Raymond Diocrès

Circa 1412-1416
Manuscript Illumination
Les Très Riches Heures du Duc de Berry, fol. 86v.

As the corpse of Diocrès is carried in for the funeral, it lifts its head and says justo dei judicio accusatus sum, "I am indicted by the just judgment of God." This is the stimulus that leads St. Bruno (probably the man in the lower right) to withdraw from secular pursuits and seek a life of prayer in the wilderness.
